Common Illnesses That Occur When Traveling Abroad

Common Illnesses That Occur When Traveling Abroad
March 6, 2020AGNES JOSEPHUncategorized

Many people look forward to traveling abroad and learning about different types of cultures. Although it can be exciting to try exotic cuisine and view historic sites, it’s important to protect your health to remain safe. When you’re preparing to leave for another country, there are a few common illnesses to be aware of as you travel.

Malaria

Malaria is extremely common in developing countries and spreads via female mosquitos. It can result in a fever, chills, vomiting, and headaches. The parasite has affected 207 million people to date and has resulted in 627,000 deaths. You can avoid getting the disease by using a mosquito net or by using repellant while visiting Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Those who are afraid of getting sick while traveling can purchase travel insurance to protect their finances if they need to pay for medical bills in a different country. Obtaining trip insurance can allow you to have peace of mind knowing that you won’t lose money on airfare or your hotel if you need to head home early or cancel some of your plans.

Influenza

Influenza spreads due to airborne droplets that spread in crowds that are in enclosed spaces and due to hand contamination. Many people get the illness during the months of October to May while spending time in the Northern Hemisphere. Influenza tends to be more prominent during the months of April to September. Getting a flu shot before traveling can reduce your risk of becoming sick. It’s also important to wash your hands frequently as you explore new locations while also using sanitizing wipes.

Yellow Fever

Mosquitos infect people with Yellow Fever, which has symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, and fever. South America and sub-Saharan Africa are common places to catch the illness, but you can avoid it by getting a vaccination before you travel.

Traveler’s Diarrhea

Approximately 10 million people get traveler’s diarrhea each year, which you can get from consuming different foods and beverages that may not be sanitary. Although 40% of people suffer from the sickness while traveling abroad, there are a few ways to reduce your risk. Avoid drinking the tap water, dairy products, and fruits or vegetables while exploring a new destination. Eat thoroughly cooked foods, drink bottled water, and stay hydrated with electrolyte drinks,

Traveling abroad can quickly turn into a nightmare for those who become sick. Although it can be easy to catch an illness, there are several ways to protect your health and enjoy smooth travels.
