2 Cheap Medical Schools in Lithuania

2 Cheap Medical Schools in Lithuania
November 27, 2019AGNES JOSEPHStudy abroad

Pursuing your medical degree in Lithuania should be regarded as a good move for a number of reasons. Firstly, Lithuanian medical schools won’t charge you a fortune in tuition. Secondly, the cost of living in the small Baltic state is also a lot less than that in most of its European Union counterparts. Thirdly, you won’t have to master a new language to study here as you will find medical programs that are taught entirely in English. So, let’s check out the two cheapest medical schools in Lithuania below.

Cheap Medical Schools in Lithuania

1. Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

Lietuvos sveikatos mokslų universitetas, or Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), hasn’t been around for long. It was founded as recently as 2010, merging two institutions: Kaunas University of Medicine and Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. Yet, this cheap medical school in Lithuania claims the honor of being the country’s largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences. The Kaunas-based public university is organized into two academies – Medical Academy and Veterinary Academy – that together comprise of seven faculties and four institutes. Its student population is north of 7,000, of which nearly 10 percent are international students hailing from around 50 different countries. The total number of academic staff is around 1,100.

LSMU’s medical program is one of the 13 programs that it offers in English. The degree earned through the program is Master of Medicine. It is six years or 12 semesters in length, consisting of 360 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Its curriculum has been designed following the problem-based learning methodology. Students attain their practical skills at the LSMU Hospital Kauno Klinikos, which happens to be the largest medical institution in the Baltic states. The university charges €12,500, or approximately $13,700, each year in tuition for this particular program.

2. Vilnius University

Vilniaus universitetas, or Vilnius University (VU), began its journey in 1579 as the first university in the Baltic states. It has nine campuses, eight of which are scattered across the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and one sited in Kaunas. It is the most populous university in Lithuania, with nearly 21,300 students currently enrolled. Of them, about 1,280 are international students. The medieval university employs more than 2,800 academic staff who facilitate higher education to the students through 14 faculties, schools and teaching centers.

The English-language medical degree offered at  this cheap medical school in Lithuania is Master in Health Sciences. Like the program in LSMU, this one too runs over the course of six years, with 360 ECTS to be earned. The program is administered by the Faculty of Medicine, which alone has nearly 400 teaching staff. Students get to use resources available at the faculty’s four large institutes as well as several hospitals and health care institutions. The annual tuition for the program is €11,000, or approximately $12,050. VU is one of the top 600 institutions in the world, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 by Subject: Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health. It ranks between 451st and 500th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019: Medicine.
