Filing a Travel Insurance Claim

Filing a Travel Insurance Claim
March 14, 2020AGNES JOSEPHUncategorized

When an unexpected illness or emergency interrupts a trip, travel insurance can help people recover some or all of their expenses. Purchasing trip protection gives you invaluable peace of mind when it comes to planning a trip, as it can cover medical emergencies, baggage theft or loss, and much more. If it’s necessary to file a claim, here are some tips that will ensure a smooth claims process.

Obtain a Doctor’s Note

Insurance companies require proof if travelers wish to cancel a trip due to illness. If this is the case, it’s important that the traveler visit a doctor and provide the insurance company with a physician’s note stating that he or she is too ill to travel. This could include details about a specific diagnosis, or could be a short statement from a doctor. Even if a traveler has a pre-existing condition, the insurance company will need verification.

During Emergencies, Seek Help First

Travelers who become ill or sustain an injury during their trip should seek medical attention immediately. While it is necessary to contact the travel insurance agency as soon as possible, attend to immediate medical needs first.

Once the ill or injured traveler is in stable condition, he or she should inform the insurance company about the situation. Oftentimes, the travel insurance provider can help travelers find a hospital if they need further care, can arrange necessary transportation, and even serve as a translator. The insurance provider can also advise travelers on how to make a claim.

Communicate with the Insurance Provider

If any issues should arise, do not delay in contacting the insurance company. Most companies provide 24/7 assistance, so travelers are able to receive the help they need when they need it. The knowledgeable agents at insurance companies can often locate resources for travelers that can help them manage their situation.

Keep All Documentation

Save as much documentation as possible when filing a claim. The insurance agency will need proof of medical expenses, including itemized bills and receipts. For lost or stolen luggage, travelers will need proof from the airline that the baggage was delayed or a police report detailing the theft. Travelers should also keep track of the agents they speak with, recording the operators’ numbers or names.

With these tips, travelers can navigate the trip protection claims process with ease and receive the funds they need in a timely manner.
